Swiss Foundation Public Domain - History
Already in 2009 Carl Flisch (music historian), Christoph Zimmermann (audio technician) and Philippe Perreaux (copyright lawyer) had the idea that most of the music on shellac records is in the Publicv Domain because all commercial shellac racords are older than 1960.
They wanted to digitally preserve this musical heritage recorded with early audio technology and make it accessible to the general public. Therefore they started the Public Domain Project of the Wikimedia Foundation (Germany).
The Swiss Foundation Public Domain was founded in December 2012. It inherited the equipment, records and digitized content of the project.
In 2017 the Archive and the domicile of the Foundation moved to Rüti ZH.
